About Us

The first question we always get asked is "how did we come up with the name 'Car Trek' ?" Well, in the summer of 1992, Malachy (the owner of Car Trek) had the good fortune to be at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles and got got to be an extra on an episode of Star Trek : The Next Generation (Season 6, Episode 1, "Time's Arrow Part II"). When we were trying to come up with a name, we obviously couldn't use the name Star Trek but definitely we wanted to pay homage to it. The movie Spaceballs was popular and had the heroes flying around in a winged Winnebago so the idea of the flying car with wings stuck in our head. From this flying car, "Car Trek" was a perfect play off of Star Trek.

Other recent ventures have involved a karaoke vehicle operated as a fun surprise for passengers under the Uber platform. Additionally,  a website selling various sci-fi, anime and superhero props and memorabilia at SciFiEmporium.com

So, who is Malachy? He was born in Ashford, Middlesex, England and was raised there before moving to the USA in 1996. Other than enjoying singing with customers on the road, Malachy has also been a science and math teacher and worked in various sales positions over the last few decades.

During his college years, and as a young adult, he was involved as stage and lighting crew with a variety of theatre productions, mostly in London's West End. Some of the productions worked on were "Little Shop of Horrors", "Macbeth", "Blood Brothers", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Rocky Horror Show". During this time, Malachy's love of science fiction also led him to also become the editor of a sci-fi / fantasy publication called "Hypo Space", until he completed college.

Life being what it is, Malachy got out of theatre related projects and focused on his teaching and sales career before starting his karaoke vehicle through Cherry Capital Cab back in 2004. Basically, crank up the music, show them lyrics on screen, and let them belt out their favorite songs.

In 2006, Malachy got to briefly revisit his love of theatre at the Old Towne Playhouse in Traverse City. Previously having worked on "Rocky Horror Show" behind the scenes as stage crew, he decided to "change it up a little" and this time played one of the party guests / Time Warp dancers on the same production. In 2011 he got to appear in the Traverse City Lip Dub as a juggler on a street corner.

Finally, around 2016, Malachy came full circle and became involved with multiple indie movie projects and a sci-fi movie documentary, as a producer, called "In Search of Tomorrow". COVID proved to be a blessing in disguise since it allowed a solid block of time to work remotely when it was not possible to interact in person.

After finishing up some of those projects, Malachy got a taste for working with film and TV productions and, along with Car Trek Theatrical Company, is involved  in many projects that have either been completed or have varying anticipated completion dates over the next few years.
